The Piano: A Timeless Instrument and Household Centerpiece

The piano has a rich and fascinating history, tracing back to the early 18th century when it was invented in Italy. The instrument quickly gained popularity and spread throughout Europe and beyond. While these dazzling stringed instruments were normally seen and heard in performance concert halls, household ownership became increasingly more prevalent. “In the early 1900s, a large percentage of middle-class homeowners owned pianos, whether they played the piano or not. The piano was a focal point of the home, a beautiful piece of furniture, and a gathering place for family and friends,” said Barry Frost, Piano Division Manager at Blues Angel Music. And when it comes to piano ownership, pianos are often passed down from generation to generation, becoming cherished heirlooms. This can be especially true for high-quality instruments, which can hold their value and even appreciate over time. However, it’s important to keep in mind that pianos require regular maintenance and tuning to stay in good condition, so it’s important to find a reputable technician to help keep your instrument in top shape. “Pianos are built to be tuned at least twice a year, and to have their action regulated every seven to ten years,” said Frost. Most folks don’t do either of these, and it affects the sound and the touch. I often hear from someone selling their piano ‘Everything still works,’ as if it’s just a matter of each key making a sound. It is so much more than that, especially when you consider that a piano has over 10,000 moving parts.”

As for customers looking to purchase a piano, there are many factors to consider. From the style and size of the instrument to the brand and price range, it’s important to do your research and find a piano that fits your needs and budget. Additionally, it’s a good idea to try out different pianos in person to get a feel for the sound and touch. Many music stores offer rentals or financing options, making it easier for customers to find the perfect piano for their home or studio. “There is an old saying: ‘If you don’t know your diamonds, then know your jeweler.’ I think it’s true with pianos,” said Frost. “When shopping at a piano dealer, it is important to make sure that the dealer has a good technical staff, preferably technicians who are RPTs, or Registered Piano Technicians with the Piano Technicians Guild. All pianos, new and used, need to be properly prepped before delivery, and they need to be properly maintained after delivery. Most importantly, a piano warranty is only as good as the dealer who sells the piano.”

Despite these responsibilities, piano ownership can be a rewarding experience for anyone who appreciates the beauty of music. Due diligence is always key to selecting the perfect piano for you and your household. It’s always important to ask questions like what are your expectations for the piano? Is this just an occasional piano? Is this just a piece of furniture? Are you looking for a practice instrument for a new student? What’s more important, touch, tone, looks, or all three? What are the total costs associated with buying and owning a piano? “Playing any musical instrument is not just a physical exercise, but rather, it is an artistic expression, with nuance, with musicality, and with passion,” said Frost. “We can experience this kind of music on every level, from early beginner to advanced, but only if the musical instrument works properly and creates a good tone, hopefully, a tone that inspires the player to PLAY!”
