For local award-winning artist and retired art teacher Sally T. Miller, art is more than a pursuit—it’s a lifelong passion rooted in creativity and a whimsical playfulness that finds beauty everywhere. “Art gives me pure joy and is an integral part of my life, while color makes me incredibly happy,” she said.

Miller, who grew up in rural Mississippi, recalls that art has always been central to her world “I always had a pencil or crayon in my hand, sketching everything around me,” she reminisced. “I remember instructing imaginary art classes as a child, so the idea of teaching was there from the beginning. I just didn’t know about it for many years.”

That early spark carried her through college and into a decades-long career, evolving from realism into expressionism and abstraction—all while sharing her passion as an art educator. “It was such a rewarding career,” she reflected.

Over the years, Miller has explored nearly every medium—from bronze sculpture and metalsmithing to pottery, oil, and watercolor. Yet it was abstract acrylic painting that ultimately captured her imagination. Her work, she explained, has been deeply influenced by her travels.

“I feel traveling helped me grow as an artist,” she said. “Seeing other cultures and how they use color and imagery opened me to new approaches in my own art.”

A pivotal moment in her creative evolution came during her travels in South America. “I was overwhelmed by the abundance of vibrant colors—in the markets, the clothing, everything,” she recalled. “It really inspired me. Over time, my work loosened from realistic and evolved, moving into expressionism enriched with color.”

Miller’s creative process remains firmly rooted in the whimsical playfulness that first drew her to art. Her style, she says, is all about play. “When I’m working, tools are in both hands and large canvases covering the drop cloths on the floor,” she laughed. “It becomes a full-body experience, in which I get completely lost.”

Her creative freedom is made possible by a supportive home environment. “I’m lucky to have a patient spouse,” she said with a smile. “Sometimes the creative process includes sawhorses in the kitchen and living area to finish large commissions on time.”

Describing her process, Miller compares a blank canvas to a box of chocolates—full of infinite possibilities. “I usually start with black mark-making, then build up vibrant layers, letting glimpses of earlier colors peek through. It begins spontaneously and then moves into something more intuitive, guided by subconscious knowledge and skills, but also influenced by life events.”

This intuitive, layered approach allows her to coax forms, lines, and shapes from the canvas as they emerge. “Even with control, this type of painting is always a process of discovery,” she explained. “That’s what keeps me coming back. The hardest part is knowing when to stop.”

But stopping completely? That was never on the table.

“I’m always painting,” she said. Recently, she completed several large commissions and had a three-story installation at The Brent Lofts. Though she retired from teaching three years ago, she remains active in the art community. With years of Best of Show awards and widespread recognition, it’s clear that Sally T. Miller’s career was born of passion—and that same love continues to shine through in every brushstroke.
