How Operation ReConnect Supports Veterans and Their Families
In the serene coastal setting of Orange Beach, Alabama, Operation ReConnect is providing Post-9/11 combat veterans and their families with something invaluable uninterrupted time together. Founded in 2014 by Ryan Charrier, this 501(c)(3) nonprofit offers week-long resort stays, allowing military families to reconnect after long and difficult deployments.
Sitting down with Ryan Charrier, it’s clear that this mission is deeply personal to him. He recalls the moment that sparked the idea, whilst serving as an A-10 Warthog crew chief in Afghanistan, he helped arrange a beach vacation for a fellow veteran upon his return. “His children had never even seen the ocean,” Charrier shares. “That really stuck with me", said Charrier. I saw how much it meant to them, and I thought to myself, ‘What if we could do this for more families?’”
That single act of kindness led him to leave his career in mechanical engineering as he dedicated himself to Operation ReConnect. Since its humble beginning in 2015, when the organization helped just 33 families, the initiative has grown exponentially. “Now, we’re aiming to serve hundreds of families every year,” Charrier says. The key to this success lies in the generosity of property owners and rental management companies who donate their vacant vacation homes. “Without them, none of this would be possible,” he gratefully acknowledges. Over the past decade, Operation ReConnect has raised over $3.5 million in donations, primarily from individuals. “Most of our donations come from everyday people giving between $20 and $100,” he adds. “It’s a testament to the power of small contributions.” Charrier emphasizes that the organization operates entirely through word-of-mouth and direct referrals, with no funds spent on marketing or advertising.
“It’s incredible to see how our mission spreads through, and the voices of those we’ve helped,” he explains. The organization serves families from all 50 states, ensuring that military members and their loved ones have the chance to reconnect, no matter where they’re based.
For those looking to contribute, Charrier highlights multiple ways to get involved. “Property owners can donate vacation weeks, and we cover all cleaning fees and auxiliary costs,” he notes. “Businesses can provide gi cards, activity passes, or discounts to enhance the experience for families.” The organization also encourages corporate partnerships, which can provide long-term impact through various forms of support. Additionally, volunteers play a critical role. “We have over 100 volunteers nationwide, many of whom are combat veterans themselves,” Charrier says.
Looking to the future, Operation ReConnect is working towards self-sustainable facilities to expand its reach and accommodate tens of thousands of families. “is mission is bigger than me, it’s about creating a lasting impact that continues well beyond my lifetime,” Charrier shares. He encourages anyone to get involved, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word. “Even small efforts, like sharing our mission on social media or mentioning us in a newsletter, can make a huge difference.” Charrier and Operation ReConnect have le a lasting impact on countless military families, providing them with much needed time together in a relaxing beach setting.
Families consistently express their gratitude for the generosity and kindness of Charrier and his team, emphasizing how the program has given them cherished memories after long separations due to deployment. Testimonials highlight the stress-free and uninterrupted quality time that Operation ReConnect facilitates, allowing service members and their loved ones to reconnect and heal. Many describe the experience as life-changing, praising the organization for its dedication to honoring those who serve. The program has been compared to a “Make-A-Wish” for military families, giving them a chance to rest, reflect, and enjoy the beauty of the Gulf Coast. The heartfelt appreciation shared by these families underscores the profound impact that Charrier and Operation ReConnect continue to have on those who sacrifice for our country.
