Foilboarding – The New Face of Water Sports
The face of watersports is changing due to the electric hydrofoil (Lift eFoil) finding its way to our waters. Foilboarding – a mix of surfing, flying, and deep powder snowboarding – is addictive and removes some of the limitations on surfing giving riders more days on the water. It is a small but growing watersport that allows riders of all levels to experience the exhilaration of surfing and over-water flight at speeds up to 25 miles per hour – without wind, waves, or towing.
The Lift eFoil is an electric hyrdofoil surfboard that allows riders to glide across the surface and rise out of the water giving boarders the sensation of flight. Controlling the board is easy. Riders adjust their speed with a handheld throttle. Similar to surfing and snowboarding, riders control the direction and lift of the board by shifting their weight. Release the throttle, and the board glides to a stop.
No Wind, No Waves, No Problem
Foilboarding feels like riding on powder because there is no board/water friction as with surfing. As a result, there is no noise, no chop, and no resistance. “The efoil is such a nice ride,” says Michael Percy, owner of XL Kites in Fort Walton Beach, a watersport retail shop and a hub for eFoil. “You are not dependent on anything – you do not need waves or wind, just the water.”
Percy is passionate about sharing his love for the outdoors and cutting edge sports. “The community around my business is filled with fun people who are into doing fun stuff,” he says. As an early adopter of many extreme sports, Percy enjoys introducing locals and visitors alike to a multitude of exhilarating watersports including kiteboarding, powered paragliding, flyboarding (think water jet propulsion boots!), and flying in the famous Cygnet Light Sport Amphibious Trike. He and his team provide in-water lessons and equipment rental.
