There was a time when boating was reserved for a certain few. We have come a long way with boats now safer and easier to operate than ever before. Skill development courses are numerous and easily accessible. More and more, we see moms out on the water mid-day during the heat of the summer with their children – because they can.
The right boat, under the right conditions, captained by a person with the right training, makes every difference in the world. Pre-season boat shows are the perfect way to select the right vessel, secure a great deal, and receive professional on-water training. Most importantly, they provide inspiration for your family’s upcoming summer adventures.

Emerald Coast Boat & Lifestyle Show – Feb 28 through March 1, 2020
The Emerald Coast Boat & Lifestyle Show – touted as the coastal lifestyle event of 30A – epitomizes all that we love about our Gulf Coast way of life. It is not your typical land-based boat show. It is a family-oriented experience with an open, happy, fun, alive vibe inspiring guests to get outside for the day.
The three-day, pet-friendly event returns to Panama City Beach February 28 through March 1 at Aaron Bessant Park – the perfect venue to spend the day with family and friends. The park is home to a canopy of shady oak trees and numerous manicured areas for children to run, fly kites, hula hoop, and play. The gently sloping landscape meets a state-of-the-art amphitheater where guests will enjoy live music and food throughout the weekend. “Being outdoors, having fun, and enjoying the great coastal experience is what this is all about,” says Chris Miller, Show Coordinator with Wheels Up Events – a prominent organizer of high-end fishing tournaments and unique family-oriented boat shows.
In addition to 330 boats totaling $40 million in marine inventory, the show plays host to a wide range of outdoor lifestyles, including cycling, SUP, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing as well as outdoor kitchen displays, grills, and boat lifts for guests to peruse and purchase. This year, there will be giveaways including a new YOLO bike, Native Watercraft Kayak, BOTE 10’6″ stand up paddleboard, and on Ladies Day (Saturday), one lucky lady will take home a YOLO stand up paddleboard.
“Boating brings families closer together through shared experiences in the great outdoors. We get that, and we embrace that lifestyle with our families too,” says Wheels Up Events Show Coordinator, Scott Burt. “The entire family needs to be a part of the purchasing decision. Boat shows allow families to shop together to find that one perfect boat that meets everyone’s needs.”
The Wharf Boat & Yacht Show – March 20-22, 2022
Not to be outdone by the Emerald Coast Boat & Lifestyle Show, The Wharf Boat & Yacht Show in Orange Beach, AL (March 20-22), presses the limits of spectacular. Alone, The Wharf is an entertainment mecca – home to the infamous Ferris Wheel, shopping, restaurants, concerts, hotel accommodations, and more.
The Wharf Boat & Yacht Show is an unparalleled event as it has both a land-based and in-water component. The sheer size of the venue allows for the display of 150 in-water yachts as well as an additional 600+ boats totaling over $140 million in inventory. “This is the only in-water boat show in the Gulf of Mexico. The next closest show is in Tampa,” offers Burt.
The in-water component is unique as it allows for the display of much larger yachts as well as on-water demos. On-water training courses led by the professionals at BoatU.S. are also available during the boat show. Whether moving up in boat size or wanting to sharpen your skills to become more confident with boating and docking in general, guests are encouraged to register for one of the confidence skill-building courses online.
Marine accessories is a vast industry. Given the sheer number of different components available today, an electronics pavilion staffed with various manufacturers will be onsite for guests to shop. “The electronics pavilion is very dialed-in and specific to the latest and greatest in electronics. Engine manufacturers will also be on-hand supporting the numerous dealers. During the event, on-water demo rides with many of the new outboards, joystick steering, and docking components will be available,” says Miller. “There is a lot going on at the Wharf Boat Show – it will take more than a full day to do and see everything,” concludes Burt.
There are many advantages to visiting a pre-season boat show, including price. Winter is the peak season for boat manufacturing and early spring delivery. If you hope to take delivery of a brand new boat or a special order, manufacturers need to add it to their production schedule during the winter months. Buying off-season comes with negotiating power and valuable add-ons to help sweeten the deal. Buying off-season also ensures that the boat has been properly winterized and ready to hit the water once you take possession. You do not have to buy a boat at the show, but you might find a deal you cannot pass up.
