With its white brick walls, sleek chrome and steel features, and bold, modern accessories, this penthouse would be at home on top of any classic high-rise in any city. But this home has one thing most urban abodes do not: birds-eye views of the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast. Look one way and see the sparkling waves of the Gulf. Look the other and see quiet back bay waters and wetlands. This home, on the 19th floor at Lagoon Towers in Gulf Shores, Alabama, truly does offer the best of all worlds.
“The homeowners, Phil and Laura Willis, wanted an urban feel, but they didn’t want to take away from the focus of the views,” said designer Pat O’Neal of Pat O’Neal Interiors in Mobile, Alabama. This is the second property she has worked on for the family.
“We met and built a relationship when I worked on their new rental property at Cottages of Romar. Then when they found this penthouse and decided they wanted it to be for their own family’s enjoyment, I was excited to work with them again. We shared a vision for this project: We all wanted a minimalistic, pure, contemporary look, but it also needed to be cool and comfortable, to be livable. I think it turned out perfect. It truly reflects them.”
The home was a total renovation. Pat worked with the family and builder Jerry Smith of Greenleaf Construction on the home’s transformation. Together, they turned a tired, dated space into the spectacular home it is today. “There was much collaborative effort in the design and the selection of furnishings,” she said. “They gave me a lot of freedom, but they knew what they wanted too.” Using reclaimed wood for the flooring added warmth and contrast as a complement to the contemporary decor.
The family’s daughter, Alex, a design student at University of Alabama, also contributed, working as an intern with Pat O’Neal Interiors while the home was being completed. “It was fun,” Pat said. “I was able to include her in the project not just as a member of the family but as a fellow design professional. It was a good experience for both of us.”
Pat has worked as a designer for 35 years and appreciates the variety that comes with each new job. “I work on every type of project and every style of decor, from bathroom remodels to complete home renovations like this. I’ve been blessed with clients who trust that my work is going to reflect them and their desires. Building good relationships: that’s what it’s all about.”
